Last Goodbye
Stale whisky in a smoky room
A dying candle warms your perfume
Remember how we started out
We knew we'd make it, never a doubt.
A better day was just a step away
Our cloud's lining was never gray
We were growing up; but you stopped showing up
You left me alone and I wish I'd known
That this would be your last goodbye.
It was never easy, things were always hard
We'd bet our future on poker cards
Head back to our room, always much too soon
Where we'd seek our dream in the light of the moon
You'd find the answers scattered all around
The questions we searched for, but never found.
We were growing up; but you stopped showing up
You left me alone and I wish I'd known
That this would be your last goodbye.
So now the memory is all I've got
I'll chase it down with another shot.
For all those feelings we'll never know
For the magic places we'll never go
The last of your perfume I found
I'm gonna breathe you in until I drown.
Writer's Commentary for Last Goodbye:
This one is actually a song I wrote awhile ago, but I liked the lyrics so much, I've put it here.
A real blues number, in the key of E Major, and a song that I'm really happy with. There's a lot of truth
in this song, and it was written directly from experiences in my life. I took the artistic liberty of
combining events that occurred with two different people for the purpose of the song, and heyit's my
song, so that's ok.
I wrestled with the verse structure on this one for the longest time, rewriting it at least fifty times before I
found one that I liked. There was one that would play well, but was difficult vocally, and there were
attempts that sang well, but were extremely difficult to play, but in the end I'm happy with how it turned
out. It ends on a bit of a downer, but it's true to what it is, and after all — that's the blues right?
